Welcome to another edition of Heart to Heart! Today we are learning all about Holly from Holly Pixels. Holly is a hand letterer and iPad lover. She loves to create SVG files, and also offers a FREE iPad lettering course (what??!!!) Let's learn some fun facts about Holly, and then get right to the heart of the interview!
What’s your favorite movie and why?
I’m a 70’s/80’s child so I always revert back to those movies like The Outsiders and anything John Hughes! It reminds me of simpler times!
Milk, Dark or White Chocolate?
Definitely DARK! I love me some dark chocolate covered almonds.
What’s the last thing you binge watched on Netflix/Hulu?
We recently just re-binged The Office again on Netflix. But more current would be Santa Clarita Diet. I was so excited for the second season.
What treat would you definitely get at a county fair?
I cannot remember the last time I was at a fair, but who would pass up funnel cake?
What music are you currently listening to?
I create these playlists on Spotify about every six months where I add music I’m really into. Right now it has Justin Timberlake’s new album, Dua Lipa, Foster the People. But I always get excited when the Throwback Jams playlist gets updated each week.
And now the Heart to Heart...
Tell us about yourself!
I’ll be 45 in May and I live in Denver area of Colorado. I moved here from St. Louis about three years ago to be closer to some family. I love the mountains. I’m a dog lover and have two rescues, Lola and Daisy. I’ve never been married and don’t have any kids. I kinda like it that way. But I get my fill of my nephew and niece. I studied printing and graphic design in the 90s and have always worked in graphic design until I went off on my own by doing freelance design and opened a portrait studio. Now I pretty much solely teach lettering.
How did you get into lettering?
When I was in college at Georgia Southern University I studied typography quite a bit. But I didn’t really do much with it until about maybe 5 years ago. I was taking an art class with Lila Rogers and then incorporated lettering into some of my work. I found myself doing more of it, but got serious about actually educating others about 16 months ago.
What do you like most about lettering?
While I love the ease of simply typing out a font quickly, there something more to lettering that’s been illustrated in a way that makes it more unique. I love that.
You teach iPad lettering for free (what?!!) Can you tell us more about that?
I do! I found that there was sooo much free information out there on lettering that I wanted to create an entire brush script lettering course on the iPad Pro using Procreate. I wanted it to be easy to have everything in one spot. I had been creating smaller tutorials on my YouTube channel and I would get asked so many questions. It only made sense to do this. You can get access to it on my website at hollypixels.com. I supplement the free part with my paid companion guides though. It’s not required to buy for the course, but it’s justified me putting all of the free stuff together.
Who is your biggest inspiration?
I love Mary Kate McDevitt! Her work incorporates a lot of illustrations that are whimsical and fun. I am always drawn to her work and I can spot it a mile away. I was at the grocery store looking at a magazine at the checkout and I was like, hey, this looks like Mary Kate McDeviit. Sure enough! It was hers!
Is there a project or accomplishment you are most proud of?
I have done a lot over the years like help scrapbook companies with product development and businesses get off the ground, but I am most proud today because I am building this community of lettering fans that want to learn from me and support me doing that. They get that I’m a real human being and I’m not perfect. I try really hard to leave in my bloopers in videos. I want people to know that it takes work and sometimes a lot of tries to get that gorgeous lettering piece that people post on Instagram.
What is a skill that you would love to learn or get better at?
I wish I could code. I can build my website and create pretty graphics but more advanced this I wish I could do. I don’t like giving up control or having to hire developers. I want to be able to do it all! I think I’m too old to learn now though.
What is your dream job?
I would love to build a community helping other people educate lettering. Like a Skillshare, but for lettering only. All kinds of lettering and fun and off-shoots of meetups and conferences. I think that would be fun to develop that and make it happen.
What advice would you like to leave us with?
Don’t stop. Letter something every day if you can. Even if it’s what people are saying on tv. The only way to get better is to keep doing it.
