Welcome to my very first blog post! I am super excited (and also a little nervous!) to embark on this new journey. I am sure you'll be able to tell I am quite the novice at this, but I know as time goes on I will improve!
To introduce myself a little, here are some random things about me: I am married to my hubby Mike (18yrs! - I feel old!). I am a stay at home homeschooling mom of 3. We just moved out of state (like literally last week!) from Maine to Florida. My hubby was a general contractor in Maine, but took a new job in Florida in April. So we are now officially Floridians!!! And I LOVE it! I love all things coffee and dark chocolate, which means my favorite ice cream flavor is Mocha Chip. I don't really have a favorite music artist, I have more favorite songs than anything. But I do love listening to anything by Bryan & Katie Torwalt and Jason Gray. My favorite movies would have to be Ever After (the part where Drew Barrymore makes her appearance as queen to her stepmom is THE best part of the movie!!) and the Rainmaker (remember that old school Matt Damon movie??). I love searching for shells on the beach. And I love washi tape.
Now that you know a little more about me, lets move onto lettering! I discovered lettering in January 2016. I saw a simple little sign in a store and thought it would be pretty neat to learn how to make that for gifts for family. So I started researching and discovered this HUGE world of lettering on Instagram. And I absolutely fell in love with it. There was SO much information however, I ended up starting backwards. Instead of starting with a hard tip pen, I went to my local Michaels and bought the first brush pen I found, a Prismacolor Premier Art Marker. For those of you that know this pen, it is VERY hard to control. It has an extremely flexible tip. I quicky became SUPER frustrated with it and stopped using it after a couple weeks. I then purchased a few calligraphy pens by Recollections with a chiseled tip (I was SO clueless!!). And stopped using those after a couple weeks too. I then stumbled onto an IG account where she faithfully used Tombow Dual Brush Pens, and that's when I really fell in love with lettering. I ordered a few of them and practiced and practiced. While I loved them so much more than the other pens I was using, I knew I still had a long way to go. I also felt something was completely missing for me, like I just wasn't doing it correctly. That's when I discovered Pieces Calligraphy and her amazing free video tutorials on the 8 Basic Strokes. And then everything just "clicked" for me! I continued practicing as much as I could, everyday! And started to see some slight improvements.
After practicing for a few months, I learned about the Tombow Fudenosuke Pen. And well, I just had to order that one too! I had practiced so much with brush pens, this pen was so foreign to me! But I quickly fell in love with it! I felt I had to re-learn everything with this pen, it was quite different! But I also felt I had to unlearn handwriting in order to learn hand lettering. It was kind of weird for me. I had learned how to write cursive in school, and everything in me wanted to letter that same way. With cursive, you write out the entire word without picking up your pen. With hand lettering, you pick up your pen after each LETTER. It took quite some time to get used to! But I kept practicing, and wrote anything that came to mind, things like what I ate for dinner, favorite desserts, song lyrics, tv shows, holidays, whatever! There are always words to practice with!
A year and half later, I can see such a huge difference in my lettering. And I know in another year from now, there will still be a huge difference! The great thing about lettering is there is always so much to learn, and always something new to be discovered!
I'd love to hear how you started your lettering journey! Feel free to comment below!
Till next time, Mandy
